It is not easy to find qualified personnel in any country. As QA Engineer role (as well as other roles in IT world) is not only a certain list of technical skills, but also the ability to research, pick out the main things (as testing is endless) when validating the application and – what is most important – to walk in end-user’s shoes. What seems to be important to you, doesn’t always mean the same thing important for your end-user. And I wouldn’t say that this process is somehow different in Canada.

At that particular moment, Electronic Arts were looking for entry-level testers for their night shift. This went together nicely with my university schedule, so I went for it. The only experience I had was the years of gaming that I spent growing up. The only things that helped me were my communication skills and the diligence that I showed; the geology and business management studies I had were useless.

The German market is different from other markets. The interview process is lengthy and sometimes it takes 6 months from screening candidate to joining candidate. QA Engineers are not easily available and if there are any QA profiles available, the skill set does not match.

If you compare software testing to art, it is hard to imagine what a Software Tester portfolio can look like. Software testing is the process where you ensure that the final product meets all user’s/business/legal requirements while being fully functional. How do you showcase a process? And if you are changing your career to tech from a completely different industry, how do you even make a portfolio of a process you have never done?!?

I don’t know whether it’s hard to find quality QA Engineers or whether as a hiring manager we don’t know what we are looking for. Whether that be creating the right job specification or advertising the role to the right people. The role is so diverse and has so many different approaches, each organisation does things slightly differently. So I think finding someone with the same experiences and has the right approach can be very difficult.

Well, firstly the person must fit into our team, so a big part of the interview is a “friendly talk” where we talk things in an informal way. That way we get to know the person a bit. Secondly the person must have a passion, some drive which makes them like the work they are doing, whatever it is. And we also like perfectionists.

I am not saying, a QA engineer doesn’t require technical skills but the level might vary from product to product and organization to organization. The discipline has also evolved over time, due to the fast changing nature of the whole industry. So in my opinion it is a very cross functional role. Whatever background you have will always prove useful on the right product and organization.
